Hillmen erupt at homecoming
Placer runs out to 38-0 lead, using stellar defense and special teams play

Placer High senior Seth Parrish celebrates his first-quarter touchdown during a 41-19 win over El Dorado Friday night at Le Febvre Stadium.

Trevor Peterson rumbled toward the end zone, poised to put El Dorado High on the scoreboard just over one minute into its Pioneer Valley League tilt at Le Febvre Stadium Friday night.

But a hustle play from Placer’s Seth Parrish wound up setting off a furious 38-point run for the Hillmen as Peterson and the Cougars put up little resistance.

Placer cruised to a 41-19 victory on homecoming night, playing a brilliant first half and coasting to 2-0 in the PVL despite a pair of scary injuries.

Parrish tracked down Peterson inside the Hillmen’s 5-yard line and the Cougars’ star fumbled the ball out of the back of the end zone, giving Placer a touchback and all the momentum it would need.

Junior Asher Gotzmer dashed down the Placer sideline for an 80-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. Jordan Arndt recovered an onside kick and two plays later Parrish cruised in from 18 yards out to make it 14-0. Cameron Southward tacked on a 22-yard field goal before the end of the first quarter.

Senior quarterback Matt Ross hooked up with Blake Schaffer for a 74-yard touchdown strike early in the second quarter. Jon Slane and Dalton Dyer added touchdown runs as the Hillmen took advantage of a pair of El Dorado turnovers to make it 38-0 with 6 minutes, 7 seconds remaining in the first half.

The onslaught left the homecoming crowd buzzing and El Dorado coach Rick Redding thoroughly impressed.

“I think Placer’s the best team we’ve seen all year and from what I’ve seen, I think they’re the best team in our conference,” Redding said. “They play incredibly hard. On defense they always have eight or nine hats around the ball. Offensively, they execute, they’re crisp, they know their jobs.”

Placer’s defense had its best performance of the season. The Cougars had averaged over 400 rushing yards per game coming in, but Peterson was held to 88 yards. Leading rusher C.J. Wheeler had 103 yards, but 50 of those came on an insignificant fourth-quarter touchdown run.

Jon Slane had an interception to set up Dyer’s second-quarter score. Arndt had a great game at defensive back, Josh Klem was superb at linebacker and senior Ken Tackitt had a sack.

“We were focusing on their running backs because they were all hyped up about how good they were,” said Tackitt, who was dwarfed by the 6-4, 230-pound Peterson. “That was a great challenge. Everyone’s bigger than me so I’m kind of used to it. It’s like 300 pounds is nothing now.”

Placer’s special teams play was sensational. The Hillmen recovered two straight onside kicks in the first quarter. Southward booted two field goals and was 5-for-5 on extra-point kicks.

The Hillmen (3-2 overall) will step out of league play with a showdown at Capital Christian next Friday.

Junior varsity

Placer 55, El Dorado 16 — The Hillmen crushed the Cougars, averaging more than 10 yards per play on offense. Josh Turney rushed for 127 yards and four touchdowns on 13 carries to lead the way.

Placer (4-1 overall, 2-0 Pioneer Valley League) also got 92 yards on eight carries from Darren Centi, who added a 30-yard touchdown reception from Collin Burnett. Burnett finished 4-of-6 passing for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Caleb Mitchell added a TD reception and Cameron Hennen rushed for 68 yards on six carries.

Good to hear that Placer is playing great ball again. Bring back the glory days coach!!

As in last weeks game, it was just great to see the whole team getting a chance to play...and play well. Placer isn't just now coming into it's own. They played two very strong opponents leading up to league play. They didn't win those games, but performed very well. Coach Montoya chose to take his squad against very good teams in order to prepare them for league contests. So I guess what I'm saying is that Placer has been playing great ball. Reading the comments by El Dorado's coach simply enforces what many of us already knew...these young men are very, very good.

"despite a pair of scary injuries." No explanation? Who got injured, Todd?
